Question

Brave enough to share the biggest mistake you've made at work?

There’s a story floating around that the SolarWinds breach was caused by an intern who set a password to “solarwinds123” and then shared it on GitHub. I doubt anyone has made this big of a mistake, but we’ve all made mistakes, right? Brave enough to share yours?

I feel like there is a missing biggest mistake from the management at Solar Winds that built a process that allowed an intern to make that mistake without any review and then threw them under the bus.

Yes. Totally agree with Travis here. This process is the worst.

Also agree. Hopefully they didn’t come down too hard on the intern (although I’d wager that they did)

If that's their excuse i will never do business with those executives.

I set up a custom domain for salesforce in preparation for moving it into okta and in the process broke all the integrations for about 4 hours while salesforce support undid my change

I deployed a 10gb Office update to the whole district in the middle of the school day once - and it removed Office from all machines for about 4 hours while it could download to 2000+ machines. Learned my lesson with that one.

I have never made a mistake in my life. Ha ha. (Actually I am trying to recall any big ones that I was the one to make the mistake, but big ones others made are coming to mind first.) I recall that when I had just started at a large real estate company, an untrained team member, with full Google Admin rights (why?), made all company calendars fully visible and public. This speaks to the process being the bigger error, and was when we quickly went and appropriately leveraged the Access Control in BetterCloud and took away the direct Google Admin rights.

I have definitely made a couple changes in Google Admin to the whole domain instead of a single OU before, including pushing out our student webfiltering extension to everyone. I fixed it in the admin console, but the force-install hadn't even propagated to all the users yet, had people asking why it got installed for days afterwards.

Love delayed propagation. “Why is this happening?” “_Sigh_ just wait like 20 minutes it’ll go away.”

Biggest mistake I did was trying to 'test' BambooHR and GSuite SCIM directory integration. I ended up renaming 378 users to their legal name and not preferred name they had in GSuite. Took me a couple hours to fix, reverse. Luckily I had BetterCloud to do actions in bulk.

At one company I accidentally loaded all the test users into production LDAP by using the wrong SFTP server and the COO came to my desk asking why security had Micky Mouse and Dwight Schrute on their onboarding dashboard. 😅
