What is your least favorite stereotypical interview question?

Answer this question to get one entry into a drawing for one of three mystery prizes, as mentioned here (the rules for the game also live there).

“Where do you see yourself in five years?”

What an annoying question - I see myself on a beach with a cool beverage and an eclair… I don’t know! What are you trying to get me to say here? I barely know what I’m going to make for dinner tonight.

My go-to answer to this one is “If I’m still alive, I hope to be happy and enthusiastic in all parts of my life, including my work. I hope to be surrounded by smart, energetic people and spending my time solving problems that create real impact. What about you?”

it used to be, “what is your greatest weakness” I always feel like it’s a cop out either way but I learned a good way to answer it is to show introspection and growth so I say “Time management is my biggest weakness, I’m always trying to help people and sometimes that gets in the way of project work that needs to be done. I’ve learned to keep detailed daily lists for myself to track progress on projects and to-do’s and this has increased my performance towards goals greatly.”

“Why do you want to work here?”

I get that there can actually be some legitimately good answers for this, especially later in your career. However, as a young, entry-level applicant, I always hated the question. I’m a naturally sarcastic person, so I always had to fight the urge to say “because I need money?”

I have to agree that it's “where do you see yourself in five years”, because hopefully everyone’s answer would be the same: “doing what I enjoy doing”. There are better ways to find out what’s on someone’s list of goals.

I have to concur with the “What is your greatest weakness” question. Its inevitably a trap question. You can either make yourself look bad if you answer the wrong way OR you make yourself look bad if you say you have not weaknesses. Doesn’t seem like a question you get alot of value out of as an interviewer.

My least favourite is "tell me about yourself". I'm lucky enough to have not been on many interviews in general, but talking about yourself is really awkward, and culturally when I first arrived over here I thought the question was literally to get to know me as a person, so it turned into kind of a truncated life story plus dating profile.

I got the job that time, so it worked out I suppose, but to this day I'm still not really sure if you're supposed to do the heard sell here or what!

What’s your greatest weakness?
I don’t know, it’s just a condescending question that should only be answered with a link to the Dunning Kruger wiki
