How long do you like to wait before installing a new OS

Windows 11 is, like most new operating systems, rough around the edges from a security and usability standpoint. Do you have a certain amount of time you wait before installing a new OS, or do you play it by ear?

I typically install a new macOS on my laptop once the public beta is available. I don't really store anything locally, so if something gets borked I'm safe. My recording station I'll wait until the "stable" release. For work, I'll install betas sooner so I can start getting a sense of what could/will change.

I think I tried to get into the Windows Insider program once, several jobs ago. I'm extremely interested in testing anything new they do, because Windows is boring and doesn't change often.

What's a Windows?

But less joking:
I think it was iOS 13 when I really updated to the earliest of early closed developer betas so i can finally get rid of this big old splash of volume rocker. In more recent years I have been more cautious on my phone. but I am running my Chromebook on the Beta Channel.

Always keep at least one Chromebook on beta.

Depends on the OS. I usually wait until the first Public Beta, or the first GM candidate (whatever microsoft and google and apple call this equivalent) to start testing, as the first alpha and beta releases change so much from week/month to month that it’s often chasing a bunch of things that’ll change or be removed before release. And to @ccoy2’s point, I put it on one test device and leave my primary alone on stable. But usually when it hits release candidate, I’ll go full pain on production just to know what’s going to break and help the team prepare documentation and workarounds. In the case of Apple’s dogshit poor software quality as of late, I’m looking at them a bit sooner, and deploying them to the fleet much, much later. Security patching be damned, we can’t deal with show stopping bugs that have been coming out.

That's a great point. Major revisions often get a full dev/public beta/general release testing schedule of some sort, and of course you should be testing those. But dot releases, or new Chrome OS versions, are often just rushed through. Especially by Sec teams. But it's important to keep up testing on those.
