Our new standard is Lenovo p43s AMD but with ubuntu rather than windows, great machines overall. We do 32gb for devs and 16gb for everyone else.

Chrome is super memory hungry so even regular users can benefit from the extra ram

Devs are receiving Lenovo P1 with 32 GB of RAM. The rest of the business receives Lenovo T14 with 16GB of RAM.

We’ve standardized on 16Gb of ram on all machines. Most users end up with a lot of chrome/edge tabs open which eat memory.

i was leaning that way as well.. though the M1 with 8gb seem so far very very stable

Yeah, most of my suppliers are looking 5-6 weeks out for all of the macs (M1 or I7)

a standard workstation + a VM is another solution

Curious @jcoutu are you doing 16gb for M1 for non-eng as well?

We haven't finished evaluating the m1s yet.

We are a Dell shop. We don't have devs but for our power users we use Dell Latitude 7000 and regular users get the Latitude 5000. We tried a few Lenovo's but have had too many problems with them. We buy the next day onsite support for all our laptops. Dell support is heads above Lenovo. Lenovo support seems very end user based with the whole turn off and on again and/or you have to factory reset it before they send a tech onsite. Dell support treats me like an admin when I call and does t have as many hoops to jump through to get a tech to come out. Dells aren't as stylish but they take a lot of abuse from our users. Also the Dell Command update software works better that the Lenovo Vantage software. I realize for larger orgs that have patch/update management solutions this is a moot point but for smaller shops it makes a big difference.

We are using a blended environment.

When people start, we give them their choice of OS between Windows 10, Ubuntu and MacOS. From there, their machine is based on role.

Dev - Linux - System76 Laptop or Desktop (User's choice) 32 GB RAM
Dev - Mac - MacBook Pro 16" 32 GB RAM
Dev - Windows - HP Z Mobile Workstation 53 GB RAM

Office Staff - Windows - HP Elitebook wtih 8 GB RAM
Office Staff - MacOS - Macbook Air M1 with 8 GB RAM
